In order to implement the policy of cultivating practical talents and enable the students to master internationalized professional knowledge, Tongji Zhejiang College (TZC) set up bilingual curriculum in 2018 for the first time to start bilingual teaching. The first series of curriculum in bilingual teaching are Principle of Automatic Control D, Management Information System, Business Correspondence and Wireless Communication Theory. Teachers are all equipped with professional teaching experience and good English language level, some even with international teaching experience. Students to be given bilingual teaching are mainly from grade 2015.
Refer to the target of bilingual teaching, school leaders indicated that bilingual teaching was the definite trend for TZC to integrate with international world and the education reform. Teacher Pan Liuping said that some students wanted to take further study abroad or work in foreign capital enterprises so that they wanted to master the main theories in both Chinese and English. Another teacher Mr. Zhang Chenjie also said that the most advanced theory in Information Management System were from foreign countries, so students should grasp certain professional knowledge and English language skills for their future development. Mr. Fan Hongtao also mentioned that response to the times’ call, especially to the call of “One belt one road”, practical international trade talents were requested, and thus students should be equipped with professional knowledge and international view.
As it was known, bilingual teaching received good feedback from the students. Mr. Zhang Chenjie said that although there was difficulty during the class, but to his comfort, students responded actively. Apart from the professional knowledge teaching, lively dialogues and interaction were also conducted well. But at the same time, bilingual teaching still faced the problems of unfeasible big class teaching, language obstacle and difficulty of catering for all students. Professor Ms. Pan Liuping mentioned that Fundaments of Mechanical Control Engineering and Principle of Automatic Control used English textbooks and tested students with English test paper; many students faced big barriers due to their English level limitation and the professional knowledge difficulty.
With series of problems occuring during the reform process, some teachers proposed “hierarchical teaching, optional choices and major focus” and they would constantly explore in bilingual teaching. TZC would also concluded experience after trial teaching and strengthen management to realize the final target for bilingual teaching. “Distinguished foreign language level, excellent in all subjects and comprehensive development” should be the goal for TZC to reach with continuous efforts.
